Writing Prompt: Astonish yourself

Think about the type of stuff you usually write. Choose a genre that's very different from your usual and write something in that genre.

  • If you usually write historical fiction, start a story with a robot.
  • If your stories skew toward science fiction, try your hand at a bodice-ripper or a western (no lasers allowed).
  • If you usually write erotic fiction, write a children's story.

Ulterior motive

On Friday, I published a quotation from William Sansom about writers being in a perpetual state of astonishment. It's a pretty romantic statement, but I think it can be true.

Stretch yourself, try something new, take a chance. And astonish yourself.
